Upgrading a gearbox for automatic gates: quieter and longer-lasting

In the home automation and access control industry, smooth operation, low noise, and long-term reliability are essential.

Automatic gates and motorised doors operate through frequent duty cycles and are often exposed to dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. Under these conditions, the quality of the gear transmission has a direct impact on motion smoothness, noise levels, and the overall service life of the system.

The challenge was to upgrade an existing gearbox for automatic gates by improving its performance and durability without changing its overall dimensions or mechanical interfaces.

The Engineering Challenge

Over time, the original transmission exhibited several common issues:

  • Gradually increasing noise levels
  • Accelerated gear wear
  • Reduced smoothness of operation

These are typical problems in home automation transmissions subjected to repeated operating cycles and changing environmental conditions.

The objective was clear: develop a quieter, more durable, and more stable gearbox while maintaining full compatibility with the existing design.

Co-Design and Technical Analysis

The project began as a collaborative engineering effort in which our technical team analysed the original transmission's geometry, materials, heat treatments, surface finishes, and lubrication conditions.

Rather than simply addressing the symptoms, we completely re-engineered the gearbox kinematics to improve its dynamic behaviour, load distribution, and long-term wear resistance.

The Gearbox Upgrade

The optimisation focused on several key areas:

  • Redesigning the gear geometry to improve load distribution
  • Selecting materials and heat treatments with greater wear resistance
  • Improving the ISO gear quality grade to reduce vibration and noise
  • Optimising surface finishes to minimise friction
  • Selecting lubricants better suited to the operating conditions
  • Defining more precise assembly procedures to minimise misalignment

The result was a gearbox for automatic gates and doors that operates more smoothly, more quietly, and with greater long-term reliability.

Results

The upgraded transmission delivered:

  • Smoother and more consistent operation
  • Significantly lower noise levels
  • Extended service life
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Full compatibility with the existing system architecture

The result is a solution that enhances the end-user experience while improving the overall reliability of the finished product.
