Gearbox for Peristaltic Pumps: Co-Designing a Quiet Transmission for Medical Devices

In the medical industry, precision, reliability, and low noise are essential requirements.

Devices such as peristaltic pumps for controlled fluid delivery must provide continuous motion, minimal vibration, and exceptionally quiet operation, particularly in hospitals and healthcare environments.

The challenge was to develop a compact, efficient, and quiet gearbox for a peristaltic pump, capable of delivering continuous performance within a highly constrained installation space.

The Engineering Challenge

Mechanical transmissions for medical devices must achieve a delicate balance between several critical requirements:

  • Smooth, consistent rotation
  • Minimal perceptible vibration
  • Low operating noise
  • Long service life
  • Compact dimensions

In this type of application, even the geometric design of the gears has a direct influence on the dynamic behaviour and acoustic performance of the entire transmission.

Collaborative Mechanical Design

The project was developed through a collaborative engineering process in which our technical team worked alongside the customer's development engineers from the earliest design stages.

The focus extended beyond the gearbox's mechanical strength to include optimisation of the transmission kinematics, with the objective of developing precision gears for medical applications capable of delivering exceptionally smooth and quiet operation.

Selecting Fine-Pitch Gears

One of the key engineering decisions was the adoption of fine-pitch gears. Rather than being simply a dimensional choice, the reduced module became a key design parameter for improving the dynamic performance of the transmission.

This approach made it possible to:

  • Increase the number of teeth without increasing the gear diameter
  • Achieve a more continuous tooth engagement
  • Reduce vibration levels
  • Minimise angular velocity fluctuations
  • Lower airborne noise emissions

The result is a quiet transmission for medical devices that delivers smooth torque transmission and consistent precision throughout its operating life.

The Technical Solution

The gearbox developed for the peristaltic pump incorporates:

  • High-precision, fine-pitch gears
  • Optimised tooth profiles for progressive engagement
  • Carefully selected materials to ensure dimensional stability and durability
  • Precision mechanical interfaces designed to minimise backlash and misalignment

The resulting transmission provides reliable operation, excellent acoustic comfort, and straightforward integration into the customer's medical device.

Results

The collaborative engineering process led to the development of a compact, precise, and quiet gearbox suitable for high-volume production while fully meeting the demanding requirements of the medical industry.

This project demonstrates how the careful design of precision gears and gearboxes for medical devices can transform a critical engineering requirement into a measurable functional advantage.
