Planetary Gearboxes

Planetary Gearbox Solutions

MICROingranaggi specializes in the production of custom and standard planetary gearboxes for applications requiring maximum precision and high torque density, serving customers across Europe and the United States, with a strong focus on the US market. Thanks to the integration between our engineering department and a workshop equipped with advanced technologies, we develop custom solutions designed to minimize backlash and deliver superior performance within extremely compact spaces.

The core of our planetary gearboxes consists of spur gears manufactured with modules from 0.2 to 3. Through the use of advanced technologies, we achieve ISO 5/6 accuracy grades, essential standards for ensuring low noise operation and extended component lifespan in both EU and US industrial applications.

Low-backlash solutions for high-precision motion

In modern automation systems, controlling angular backlash is a critical factor. Our planetary gearbox design focuses on achieving low backlash, a key feature to:

  • Improve positioning accuracy in drive systems
  • Increase torsional stiffness of the system
  • Eliminate response delays, ensuring smooth and dynamic motion

Each planetary gearbox is designed to integrate seamlessly into the customer’s application.

  • Materials: We use case-hardening steels, stainless steel, or engineering polymers (POM, PEEK) depending on torque requirements or noise reduction needs
  • Full-service approach: We manage all heat and surface treatments as a main contractor, supplying fully assembled, tested, and certified gearboxes using Klingelnberg P26 measuring systems

Standard solutions: precision and optimized variants

Our entire product range features a shrink-disc coupling system for NEMA standards, which is also applicable to micro-gearboxes for compact applications. Serving clients across both Europe and the USA, this innovation ensures a precise and immediate mechanical connection between the gearbox and the electric motor, guaranteeing

  • N Series (Low noise): Optimized for acoustic comfort thanks to the use of engineering polymer planet gears in the first reduction stage
  • X Series (High strength): Designed for heavy loads, with reinforced planet gears and alloy steel gearing to maximize service life
  • Customization: Starting from standard platforms, our workshop can customize shafts, flanges, and ring gears to meet specific dimensional constraints

Fast integration: customer-supplied motors and NEMA System

Our entire range is designed to integrate with NEMA coupling systems, widely used in the United States. This solution enables precise and immediate mechanical connection between the planetary gearbox and the electric motor, ensuring:

  • Self-assembly: Customers can independently assemble motor and gearbox without special tools
  • Simplified maintenance: Quick motor replacement in case of wear, reducing downtime
  • Logistics efficiency: Reduced lead times and lower environmental impact related to transport and assembly

Thanks to the expertise of our engineering department, we go beyond supplying the gearbox. We offer full integration with any customer-supplied electric motor, designing the optimal mechanical interface to ensure vibration-free coupling and performance fully aligned with the final application requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Low backlash improves positioning accuracy, increases torsional stiffness, and reduces response delays. It is a key feature in high-precision motion systems.

For both cylindrical gears (spur, helical, bevel) and worm gears, we can manufacture gear teeth with modules ranging from 0.2 to 3.

The performance differences between spur gears and helical gears mainly concern noise, load capacity, efficiency, vibration, and axial load management.
The main advantages of helical gears include quieter operation, reduced vibrations, higher load capacity, and more uniform load distribution. On the other hand, they generate axial loads and require more complex manufacturing processes, resulting in higher costs.

Our cylindrical gears can reach accuracy grades up to class 6 according to ISO/DIN standards, even on case-hardened components, thanks to the use of skiving technology performed on our modern CNC machines.
